Employees equipped with advanced technology have the privilege of working from home and thus stay safe from the pandemic whereas low income blue collar labors have to work physically and thus risk their health. In this project, we want to explore the technology segregation’s impact on labor inequality. Secondly, this project experiments with the possibility of people living and working together with artificial intelligence. This is done with architectural design for the techno-bourgeoisie and techno-poletariat that is both human and non-human. Layers of cables and pipes build up the artificial ground in which transportation and connection functions as natural as tree roots, and as unnatural as the speedy high-tech connections. This lack of knowledge on trees led to the mismanagement and lack of budget on the trees in the city for a long time in the past until recent. The uneven distribution has also resulted in serious heat island effect around Dallas, particularly those areas around the site. This Cyclopedia of Trees takes the existing but neglected catalogue of plants on the site into the building, and extracts the horizontal nature vertically to form a vertical catalogue of forest, arranged by species. The rest of the building include an archive, reading rooms, outlook spaces, galleries, a rooftop green house and other activity spaces for visitors to further study the plants systematically through books and images, after being absorbed in the vertical forest. The horizontal catalogue of plants on sites by the Trinity river, the vertical catalogue of trees ascending the building, along with the specimen galleries and written catalogue of trees in the library space, together form a Cyclopedia of Trees. The Oasis With the entire city Philadelphia being urbanized and industrialized, the new constructions are pushing nature further and further away from the city and its residents. The lens of food production is a way of exploring the interdependence between nature and man. The proposal seeks to utilize this interdependence rather than romanticize nature, bringing nature back into the city in a more subtle way, without taking a protective preservative position for the nature, but to rebuild nature in a way that may coexist with residents. Hidden behind the industrial red brick wall, the proposal opens up as an oasis in the city. Its curvy glass façade, narrow at both ends while opens at the center to mimic the shape of antelope, reminds people of the experience of walking in nature outside city. The receeding position of the green roof, resembling the shape of terraces, was designed to maximize the sunlight received.
